WATER-BASED INTUMESCENT PAINT FOR STEEL STRUCTURES

Code:
KM I-CHAR 21 plus
KM I-CHAR 21 PLUS is used for fire protection of steel structures and in other fields of application.
In structural fire resistance applications it provides fire protection for up to 90 minutes.
KM I-CHAR 21 PLUS is tested with the most recent European certifications based on the EN 13381-8 standard and is ETA certified (European Technical Approval n° 17/0180), CE marking and DoP
KM I-CHAR 21 PLUS is a high-performance water-based intumescent paint with very low VOC, which guarantees a very effective fire barrier thanks to the high content of active solids, the resistance of the intumescent foam and the use of nanofillers.
The rapid development of a stable carbon foam, with a low heat exchange coefficient, guarantees effective protection for flammable and non-flammable supports.
Intumescence is “swelling during charring.”

PRODUCT DETAILS

KM I-CHAR 21 PLUS ha Special chemical compounds present in the paint react when the temperature exceeds 200°C generating a foam that expands at low volumetric density up to 100 times higher than the original dry film. This foam guarantees an effective barrier to heat transmission, protecting the support.
Structural fire resistance plays a key role in fire safety. In commercial and industrial buildings, hotels, airports, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, cinemas, theatres, multi-storey car parks and any large building, the use of intumescent coatings extends the resistance of the structures case of fire, saving lives, preserving the structure to allow the evacuation of the occupants and the safe operation of the Fire Brigade.

USE AND APPLICATION

Depending on the conditions, adequate preparation of the support is necessary, which may include cleaning, degreasing and removal of loose particles.
Steel surfaces are usually sandblasted SA 21 ½, so an anti-corrosion primer should be applied.
Spray application is generally carried out in at least two coats, crossed wet on wet, with airless systems.
A typical application of 1.5mm dry = 2.7kg/m2 wet is done with two coats of approximately 1mm thickness wet. Suitable equipment is an airless piston pump with minimum compression ratio = 40:1, minimum pressure 150 bar (e.g. GRACO MARK V or WAGNER ProSpray PS34), Reverse-A-Clean self-cleaning nozzle, nozzle diameter 45-50 mil = approx. 1 mm, 3/8“ supply hose max. length 30 m.
The average volume flow in common airless spray applications ranges from 3 to 6 I/min.
Gun filters, line and power supply must be removed with each operation.
The application can also be carried out with a brush or roller, with single long strokes without going over. Brush/roller application will require more coats than airless. During application and drying it is necessary to operate in suitable environmental conditions.

RECOMMENDED PRIMER AND FINISH

KM I-PRIMER 036: Fast drying phenolic modified alkyd primer for steel/galvanised steel.
KM I-PRIMER 3500: Primer for concrete and masonry.

Several commercial primers on the market are compatible. A list of primers is available from our technical service.
According to the principles of ETAG 018 (point 5.0.4., evaluation by typology) and our tests, KM I-CHAR 21 PLUS is compatible with alkyd systems. According to the compatibility report Pr-07-2.094n, direct application on galvanized steel is also possible.
The finish can be useful in any environment to improve the aesthetic appearance and reduce the adhesion of dirt. Intumescent paints are not suitable for use in the presence of condensation or rain, therefore in humid environments exposed to the outside, making it necessary to apply a finish with adequate water-repellent characteristics.
In interior environments according to classes Z1 and Z2 of ETAG 018 no finish is generally required. In semi-exposed environments according to class Y of ETAG 018, our IDROSOL water-based acrylic paint is required. In completely exposed outdoor environments according to class
