KM IMPIANTI

WATER-BASED INTUMESCENT PAINT FOR THE FIRE PROTECTION

Code:
KM I-CHAR 21
KM I-CHAR 21 is used for the fire protection of steel structures, concrete, reinforced concrete, compartmentation masonries in brick or concrete and in other fields of application.

It guarantees a class of fire resistance up to 2 hours.

KM I-CHAR 21 is an high performances water-based intumescent paint, with low VOC. The active solids, the strength of the intumescent foam and the use of nanofillers guarantee an efficient fire barrier.

The fast development of a stable carbon foam with low coefficient of heat transmission guarantees an efficient protection of the flammable and inflammable substrates.

PRODUCT DETAILS

KM I-CHAR 21 has superior eco-compatibility characteristics certified by various evaluation reports including the Swedish EPD and test results according to EN ISO 16000 for indoor emissions.

Intumescence is “swelling during carbonization”.

Special chemical compounds in the paint react when the temperature exceeds 200°C generating a foam that expands at a low volume density up to 100 times greater than the original dry film. This foam provides an effective barrier to heat transmission, protecting the substrate.

Structural fire resistance plays a key role in fire safety. In commercial and industrial properties, hotels, airports, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, cinemas, theatres, multi-storey car parks and any large building, the use of intumescent coatings extends the resistance of structures in the event of fire, saving lives, preserving the structure, to allow the evacuation of occupants and the safe operation of the Fire Brigade.

USE AND APPLICATION

Adequate preparation of the substrate is required depending on the conditions, such as cleaning, degreasing and removal of loose particles.

Steel surfaces are generally sandblasted SA 21 ½ and then an anti-corrosive primer applied.

Spray application generally requires two hands, crossing wet on wet, with airless systems. A typical application of 1.5 mm dry = 2.7 kg/m2 wet is done with two coats of approximately 1 mm thickness wet. The appropriate equipment is an airless piston pump with minimum compression ratio = 40:1, minimum pressure 150 bar (e.g. GRACO MARK V or WAGNER ProSpray PS34), Reverse-A-Clean self-cleaning nozzle, nozzle diameter 45-50 mils = approx. 1 mm, 3/8“ flexible supply hose, maximum length 30 m. The average volumetric flow rate in common airless spray applications ranges from 3 to 6 I/min.

The gun filters, line and supply should be removed at each operation. The application can also be done with a brush or roller, with single long passes, without going over. Brush/roller application will require more coats than airless. During application and drying you must operate in suitable environmental conditions.

RECOMMENDED PRIMERS AND FINISHES

KM I-PRIMER 036: Rapid drying, phenolic modified alkyd primer for steel/galvanised steel.

KM I-PRIMER 3500: Primer for concrete and masonry.

Different primers commercially available on the market are compatible. A list of primers is available from our technical service.

According to the principles of ETAG 018 (point 5.0.4., evaluation by typology) and our tests, KM I-CHAR 21 is compatible with alkyd systems. According to the compatibility report Pr-07-2.094n, direct application on galvanized steel is also possible.

The finish can be useful in any environment to improve the aesthetic appearance and reduce the adhesion of dirt. Intumescent paints are not suitable for use in the presence of condensation or rain, therefore in humid environments exposed to the outside, making it necessary, in this case, to apply a finish with appropriate water-repellent characteristics.

In internal environments according to classes Z1 and Z2 of ETAG 018 no finish is generally required. In semi-exposed environments according to class Y of ETAG 018 our water-based acrylic paint IDROSOL is required. In completely exposed external environments according to class

CERTIFICATIONS AND APPROVALS

KM I-CHAR 21 is attested by European certification and numerous approvals in Europe and other countries.

Fire protection performance for steel structures is certified according to EN 13381-4 and EN 13501-2.

For reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed reinforced concrete (CAP) structures, EN 13381-3 test and evaluation reports are available for both beams/columns and floors/walls.

The application on masonry compartment walls is supported by classification reports according to EN 13501-2 (tests according to EN 1364-1), which includes both plastered perforated brick walls and unplastered concrete blocks, starting from 8 cm of thickness.

When applied on wood KM I-CHAR 21 complies with fire reaction class B-s2, d0 on all wood substrates including MDF. When applied on non-fireproof XPS it guarantees a class C.
