KM IMPIANTI

SOLVENT-BASED INTUMESCENT PAINT FOR STEEL STRUCTURES

Code:
KM I-CHAR 22
KM I-CHAR 22 is used for fire protection of steel structures and in other fields of application.
In structural fire resistance applications it provides fire protection for up to 2 hours.
KM I-CHAR 22 is a solvent-based high performance intumescent paint which guarantees a very effective fire barrier thanks to the high active solids content, the strong and durable intumescent foam with excellent gripping capacity.
The rapid development of a stable carbonaceous foam with a low heat transfer coefficient ensures effective protection for flammable and non-flammable substrates.

PRODUCT DETAILS

The solvent-based composition of KM I-CHAR 22 has advantages for applications in harsh environmental conditions with low temperatures and high humidity, and can resist rain.
Intumescence is the “swelling during charring”.
Special chemical compounds in the paint react when the temperature exceeds 200°C generating a foam that expands at a low volume density up to 100 times higher than the original dry film. This foam guarantees an effective barrier to heat transmission while protecting the substrate.
Structural fire resistance plays a key role in fire safety. In commercial and industrial buildings, hotels, airports, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, cinemas, theatres, multi-storey car parks and any large building, the use of intumescent coatings extends the resistance of structures in the event of a fire, saving lives, preserving their structure for allow the evacuation of the occupants and the safe operation of the Fire Brigade.

USE AND APPLICATION

Adequate preparation of the substrate is required depending on the conditions, which may include cleaning, degreasing and removal of loose particles.
Steel surfaces are generally sandblasted SA 21 ½ , then an anti-corrosion primer is applied.
Spray application is generally carried out with at least two coats, crossing wet on wet, with airless systems.
A typical application of 1.5 mm dry = 2.7 kg/m2 wet is made with two coats approximately 1 mm thick wet. Suitable equipment is an airless piston pump with minimum compression ratio = 40:1, minimum pressure 150 bar (e.g. GRACO MARK V or WAGNER ProSpray PS34), Reverse-A-Clean self-cleaning nozzle, nozzle diameter 45-50 mils = approx. 1 mm, 3/8“ supply hose max. length 30 m.
Average volume flow in common airless spray applications ranges from 3 to 6 I/min.
Gun filters, line and power supply should be removed with each operation.
The application can also be done with a brush or roller, with single long strokes without going over. Brush/roller application will require more coats than airless. During application and drying it is necessary to operate in suitable environmental conditions.

RECOMMENDED PRIMER AND TOPCOAT

KM I-PRIMER 036: Phenolic modified, fast drying alkyd primer for galvanized steel/steels.

Several commercially available primers on the market are compatible. In general KM I-CHAR 22 is compatible with alkyd primers. A list is available from our technical service.
The finish can be useful in any environment to improve the aesthetic appearance and reduce the adhesion of dirt. Intumescent paints are not suitable for use in the presence of condensation or rain, therefore in humid environments and exposed to the outside, making it necessary to apply a finish with appropriate water-repellent characteristics. In interior environments according to classes Z1 and Z2 of ETAG 018 no finishing is generally required. In semi-exposed environments according to class Y of ETAG 018 our solvent-based acrylic paint IDROSOL is required. In completely exposed outdoor environments according to class X of ETAG 018 or corrosion class C3 according to ISO 12944 our PURETHAN two-component solvent-based polyurethane must be used and the application must be particularly careful.
